Covid-19 is predicted to cause an epidemic of person directed aggression and violence worldwide.

Men and Depression

“Men and women both experience depression but their symptoms can be very different. Because men who are depressed may appear to be angry or aggressive instead of sad, their families, friends, and even their doctors may not always recognize the anger or aggression as depression symptoms. In addition, men are less likely than women to recognize, talk about, and seek treatment for depression. Yet depression affects a large number of men”. Google

The need for trained, certified Anger Management Facilitators (CAMF) will be unprecedented. Teachers, substance abuse counselors and mental health professionals who achieve training now will be well prepared to respond to this anticipated demand.

The Anderson & Anderson, APC comprehensive Anger Management curriculum is currently the most widely used
Emotional Intelligence Anger Management in the world.
This 40-hour Facilitator Certification is now available on-line via Incubate Media.

Covid-19 is increasing “disruptive physician behavior in Canada

Psychologically, physician burnout can contribute to increased incidence of stress, disruptive behaviorand mood disorders. There is a strong correlation with depression. Frequently there are increased odds of substance abuse in physicianswith increased alcohol abuse/dependence, especially in surgeons and ER physicians.

In response to a request from a leading Emergency Room Physician in Canada, Anderson & Anderson, APC will begin offering our EI Coaching for “disruptive physicians” via Skype to physicians in al Provinces.

This coaching curriculum consists of Pre and Post Emotional Intelligence Assessments as well as individual coaching sessions for six-months. Coaching is available consistent with the needs of busy physicians seven days a week.

We encourage interested physicians to view our linked in profile. Contact us via phone or Google George Anderson, MSW, LCSW or Anderson & Anderson, APC.
Our physician coaching brochure is listed on our website.

Successful coaching models must include evidenced based practice along with Pre and Post Assessments

Research in coaching has demonstrated the need to learn by doing it. Seminars don’t work. Coaching is a skill set that requires one-on-one or small group work with considerable clinical supervision and feedback from someone with a great deal of experience.

Emotional Intelligence Coaching is demonstrating the effectiveness of 13-week/three month training course compared with two-day block training. The following study is instructive:
Enhancing coaching skills and emotional intelligence through training” by Anthony M. Grant, Director, Coaching Psychology Unit, School of Psychology, University of Sydney Australia.
Findings – Participation in the 13-week training course was associated with increases in both goal-focused coaching skills and emotional intelligence, whereas the two-day block intensive training was associated with increased goal-focused coaching skills, but not emotional intelligence. Further, the magnitude of the increase in goal-focused coaching skills was less for the two-day program than for the 13-week program”.

It is impossible to include clinical supervision in a two-day course. A three-month program can include an assessment of the coach as well as each coaching client followed by a post EQ-i-2.0 assessment.

Emotional Intelligence Physician Coaching Is Free of Stigma

Few physicians are comfortable being mandated to do anything. However, mandating a physician to complete an Emotional Intelligence Coaching Program is easier than getting a child to eat ice cream. Therefore, Physician HR Managers, Chiefs and Credential Committees experience considerable difficulty getting physicians to attend mandated intervention for “disruptive behavior/burnout”.Even Continuing Medical Education Classes are considered an insult to most physicians who are mandated to attend such courses.

A more effective alternative that appeals to physicians is Emotional Intelligence Coaching for impulse control. Emotional intelligence is defined as, “a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges, and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way. It reflects one’s overall well-being and ability to succeed in life.”–MHS. It is the EI assessment that sells the value of EI coaching. The EQ-i-2.0 includes fifteen scales designed to increase a persons’ ability to recognize and manage his or her feelings as well as the feelings of others. EI skills are needed for all healthcare professionals. Anyone who is motivated to enhance his or her emotional intelligence can do so by practicing the skills in which he scores in the low range. Emotional intelligence coaching is made more in-depth by using a minimum of three independent raters who are selected by the physician and the referring person to complete a 360 EQ version of the same assessment taken by the physicians. These raters provide the client with a more objective view of his or her EI competencies.

REPORT THIS AD
EI coaching is customized to increase the competencies in which the physician scores in the deficit range. Some of the skills that are the focus of the coaching include: self-awareness, self-control, social awareness, relationship management, empathy, assertiveness, stress tolerance, flexibility and self-regard.

Many of the physicians who complete this coaching model recommend it to others and some opt to continue on a volunteer basis once the six-month coaching is completed. Emotional intelligence is rapidly becoming the most popular intervention offered to health care workers as well as persons in leadership positions.
Unlike psychotherapy, counseling or mental health treatment, there are no stigmas associated with emotional intelligence coaching. Physicians respect learning and are highly motivated to gain new competencies that improve patient care.

Person-directed violence and aggression will become yet another epidemic as a result of Covid-19

Physicians working to treat coronavirus are reporting an increase in stress, anxiety, depression and "disruptive behavior". Unfortunately, physicians are reluctant to access counseling or psychotherapy based on the risks of career derailment.

The Joint Commission of The Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has approved Emotional Intelligence Coaching for "disruptive physician behavior" since 2008. This coaching includes Pre and Post Assessments as well as skill enhancement in self-awareness, self-control, social awareness and relationship management.

The incidence of domestic violence is already reaching alarming rates worldwide. The orders to stay at home, social distance and self-quarantine are meant to keep people safe during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, for survivors of domestic violence, their home may not be the safest place.
António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations confirms the surge in domestic violence is global. Domestic violence advocates are currently reporting an increase in people calling help hotlines. Becky Lee with Becky's Fund, a non-profit in D.C. that works to end domestic violencesays:"These survivors are seeing the additional stress of having this place where you are with that person all day long and not having any outlets. Sports are not going on, you can't go to the gym, maybe with work even the added stress of financial stress of maybe losing your job or having to work from home, no child care," Lee said. "All these different factors are adding to tensions of being not only already in a situation where you are walking on eggshells because you have to be in that physical space with your abuser."
It is clear that Certified Anderson Management Facilitators who offer Emotional Intelligence Assessments and intervention will be in demand worldwide. In contrast to psychiatric treatment, emotional intelligence coaching is stigma free.
