2019 Trends In Emotional Intelligence Coaching

As 2018 comes to an end, the trends for the coming year indicates that Emotional Intelligence Coaching is providing evidence of it’s effectiveness for a surprisingly wide range of clients. Emotional Intelligence skill enhancement is a positive intervention that is easy for clients to embrace. There are no stigmas attached to increasing one’s ability in self-awareness, self-control, social awareness and relationship management.

Referrals for “disruptive physicians and executives” showed a dramatic increase in November and December. Emotional Intelligence Assessments and coaching for executive leadership continues to increase across industries. This includes IT, Healthcare and Entertainment.

One of the most notable trends for 2019 is the interest in emotional intelligence assessments and coaching on the part of millennia’s.

Here are some of the unusual requests recently:
·     A request to present on Emotional Intelligence for Capital One Café’s.
·     An invitation to present on Emotional Intelligence at a Malibu Retreat for millennia’s.
·     A combination of live and SKYPE coaching for a couple from Saudi Arabia.
·     Emotional Intelligence assessments for work groups regarding conflicts.
·     Requests and referrals of autistic/young children with explosive anger.
·     Emotional Intelligence parenting.

Certification in Emotional Intelligence Coaching is an excellent addition to mental health practice.

Executive Coaches Can Benefit From Training In Mental Health

Generally, when I receive a new coaching client, I ask for information on the reason for the referral and what, if any other interventions have been attempted. Some of the coaching requests are coaching to develop skills, enhance performance, develop leadership or disruptive behavior.

Since 2017, I have provided a six-month Emotional Intelligence skill enhancement in a wide range of emotional intelligence competencies. We have used the EQ-i-2.0 Pre and Post Assessment for each client. In addition, I routinely provide a clinical assessment for psychological functioning.

Most of my coaching clients have been physicians. A significant number are experiencing un-diagnosed depression, anxiety and relationship conflicts. In general, professionals and managers have higher rates of stress, anxiety and depression than skilled, semiskilled and unskilled individuals.  For coaches not trained in psychology and mental health, is it is simply not possible to assess for mental health problems in their coaching clients.

Within the next week, AAAMP will inmate a Go Fund Me Campaign for two schools

The American Association of Anger Management Providers has decided to initiate a Go Fund Me Campaign to secure funding for anger management classes in lieu of suspension for aggressive behavior.  Two middle schools located in low- income communities of Los Angeles County will be the recipients of these classes. One school is in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles. The second school is in Lynwood, an impoverished community near Compton.

Certified Anger Management Facilitators who are members of The American Association of Anger Management will provide a one -semester anger management/emotional intelligence class in each school using pre and post EQ-i-2.0 assessments along with the internationally recognized Anderson & Anderson, APC curriculum.

Graduate students from two Social Work Schools will conduct research on the effectiveness of these two pilot programs.

Anger Is Not An Illness

#AngerIsNotAnIllness
I have decided to share my views on Anger Management as well as Emotional Intelligence Coaching.
1.) Anger is a normal human emotion.
2.) Anger is a problem when it occurs too frequently, is too intense, lasts too long, impacts health, destroys interpersonal relationships or leads to aggressive behavior or violence.
3.) Since anger is not an illness, counseling or psychotherapy is not useful.
4.) Angry behavior is learned from family of origin. Any behavior that is learned can be unlearned.
5.) Anger Management skills can be learned by participating in an Emotional Intelligence Assessment along with coaching or classes designed to recognize and managing anger, stress and communication.
6.) Emotional Intelligence teaches skills in self-awareness, self-control, social awareness and relationship management.
7.) Certified Anger Management Facilitators (CAMF) are all trained in anger management, stress management, communication and emotional intelligence.

Anderson & Anderson, APC Are The Experts In Emotional Intelligence Training

I would like to share my incredible success as an Emotional Intelligence Coach for “disruptive physicians”. “Disruptive physicians” is a term coined in 2007 by Dr. Alan Rosenstein, M.D. on behalf of The Join Commission on The Accreditation of Healthcare Organization in the U.S. In short, a disruptive physician is a physician whose behavior at work “may risk patient safety”.

I was the first person in the U.S. to offer this type of coaching and quickly become the largest provider based on the fact that I was asked to develop a non-psychiatric intervention for physicians. In addition, I was aided in developing this curriculum by a group of physicians most of whom are surgeons.

In addition to coaching physicians, we provide emotional intelligence skill enhancement training for hospitals and healthcare organizations including team development. Please visit Google me, George Anderson, MSW, LCSW, CAMF.  Please also view my linked in profile.

One Physician Referral From A Hospital Is Worth 100 Self-referrals

Coaching niches that focus on “helping clients become the person they were meant to be” are unlikely to ever receive a referral from a Hospital or any other organization. If your client referral base is dependant on the general public, it will be almost impossible to sustain a coaching practice.

A practical business response may be to seek a niche that is needed by persons who have the resources to pay. Emotional Intelligence Coaching is a broad niche that is increasing in popularity on a daily basis,

Emotional Intelligence Coaching works for Anger Management

Anger is a normal human emotion that is secondary to stress, anxiety, depression or some other primary emotion. Anger is not a pathological disorder. According to the American Psychiatric Association, anger is a lifestyle issue and not in the domain of mental illness.
There are seven signs that anger is problematic in a person’s life:
  • When anger is too frequent
  • When anger is too intense
  • When anger last too long
  • When anger leads to aggression
  • When anger destroys relationships
  • When anger impacts health
  • When anger risks career derailment
For the first time in the history of Executive Coaching for Anger Management, the number of volunteer and mandated referrals are coming from H.R. Managers, intimate partners and physician well-being committees nationwide.

As high-income professionals experience the positive effects of the skill enhancement components of emotional intelligence coaching, they refer or recommend coaching for colleagues, direct reports or family members.
Word of mouth referrals are off the charts
The critical factors that account for the effectiveness of Emotional Intelligence Coaching for impulse control are its comprehensive non-psychiatric assessments, which are based on 15 Emotional Intelligence Scales.
These scales are:
  • Self-Regard
  • Self-Actualization
  • Emotional Self-Awareness
  • Emotional Expression
  • Assertiveness
  • Independence
  • Interpersonal Relationships
  • Empathy
  • Social Responsibility
  • Problem Solving
  • Reality Testing
  • Impulse Control
  • Flexibility
  • Stress Tolerance
  • Optimism.
The EQ-I-2.0 Emotional Intelligence Assessment that is used in this coaching program is offered on-line and the coaching is available live our via Skype by George or Bryan Anderson.

One Positive Unintended Consequence Of Heavy Traffic In California

One Positive Unintended Consequence Of Heavy Traffic In California

My firm, Anderson & Anderson, APC provides Emotional Intelligence Coaching for Professionals. For physicians and busy executives, time is valuable and expensive.

In coaching surgeons, I quickly learned that the cost of one lost hour of driving to and from coaching is extremely costly for the surgeon, the hospital and frequently, the patient.

In response to this problem, I began offering to provide coaching to the surgeon on-site. This immediately became popular based on the cost savings to our clients. I charge $500 per hour. In contrast to a surgeon’s fees, this amount is a clear bargain.

Beginning next week, I will fly from Los Angeles weekly for a two- hour session with a physician leader. I will be reimbursed for ground translation, round trip air fair and my fees. This will be a six-month program.

Success in coaching depends on demonstrated expertise in a niche that is needed and wanted by clients who have the ability to pay. In addition, the client’s needs should always come first.

What's New In Anger Management?

Forget about Court Mandated defendants dominating anger management groups. Forget about most anger management being offered in a small group format. Certified Anger Management Facilitators throughout the U.S. are reporting a remarkably different client population.

Lets take a look at the changing client population of Certified Anger Management Facilitators.(CAMF):

1). Caucasian males who are college graduates are seeking assistance at the request of their significant others.

2). Beverly Hills Teenage girls and boys are voluntarily seeking anger management to enhance communication skills and emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence increases one’s popularity.

3). Psychologists and Psychiatrists are referring their clients for specific help in managing stress and anger.

4). Mediators, Family Law Court Attorneys and Judges are referring clients who are in bitter divorce disputes.

5). Hollywood Artists Agents are referring their Celebrity Clients for assistance in increasing their emotional intelligence.

The most noticeable change is the move from groups to individual coaching for skill enhancement in emotional intelligence.

The Scope of Anger Management Practice Expands

Anger Management is frequently being seen as a practical application of Emotional Intelligence Skill enhancement in self-awareness, self-control, social awareness and relationship management.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Nervous and Mental Disorders does not list anger as an illness. Rather, while anger is the symptom of a range of disorders, it is not an illness. Instead, the way one responds to anger is learned and any learned behavior can be changed.
The Scope of Anger Management continues to expand as the importance of Emotional Intelligence in impulse control, interpersonal relationships and leadership becomes better known.
Here is a short list of interventions that involve anger management/impulse control:
·      Coaching for “disruptive physicians”.
·      Emotional Intelligence for Couples.
·      Organizational Anger Management for violence prevention or customer services.
·      Adolescent Anger Management in Middle and High Schools in lieu of suspension
·      Adult Anger Management in Prison Reentry Programs
·      Anger Management Courses for Middle Managers
·      Civility Training for Attorneys
·      Emotional Intelligence for Leadership

Business and Industry are beginning to recognize that Anger Management/ Emotional Intelligence is an investment rather than a cost. The introduction of Anger Management into the U.S. Postal Services eradicated “GOING POSTAL”

Emotional Intelligence Coaching For Disruptive Physicians Is My Largest Niche

The general public has little understanding of what “disruptive physician” means in relation to health care. Anderson & Anderson, APC was the first Emotional Intelligence Coaching firm in the U.S. to publish a curriculum designed with physician input for addressing this important issue.
·       The American Medical Association (AMA) defines disruptive behavior as personal conduct, whether verbal or physical, that negatively affects or that potentially may negatively affect patient care.
·     Based on the above definition, in 2006, Anderson & Anderson, APC was asked by the Medical Director of a major hospital chain to develop a one on one coaching model to address this issue.
·     The hospital chain in question was interested in a coaching curriculum that had physician input and recognition of the need to protect doctors from damage to their reputations from any intervention that may imply psychiatric treatment.
·     The Anderson & Anderson, APC client workbook for executives and physicians is The Practice Of Control by George Anderson.
·     This six-month Emotional Intelligence Coaching is offered live on location any where in the U.S. or at Anderson & Anderson, APC in Los Angeles, CA.

Rural Communities Are Too Often Starved For Needed Training

Prison Re-entry Programs in California are needed in all of California Counties. Popular designations such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and San Jose are favored locations for trainings in almost any topic or discipline. Rural communities such as Brawley, El Centro, Hollister or even Fresno are frequently ignored at significant costs to these and similar locations. This pattern of neglect is common throughout the U.S.

Two of the required interventions for all re-entry programs in California are Anger Management Classes and/or coaching provided by Certified Anger Management Facilitators (CAMF) and Batterer’s Intervention Facilitator Certification for domestic violence perpetrators (CDVF). There are few trainers in the state that are approved providers of these two certifications.

The largest provider of these two certifications in the U.S. that is approved by Probation, Parole, Department of Corrections, Courts, Schools and Social Service Agencies is Anderson & Anderson, APC.  This model includes Pre and Post Assessments along with client workbooks.

Providers from Sacramento Unified School District, McAlister Institute of El Centro, California as well as Plumas County Rural Services have been trained in this curriculum. The Cocopah and Quechan Tribes of Yuma, Arizona as well as the Kaurik Tribe in Northern California have also sponsored our trainings in their respective communities/reservations.

In response the requests from the Faith Community in Yuma, Arizona and Imperial County California, Anderson & Anderson, APC has decided to present its’ Anger Management Facilitator Certification Training in Brawley, Ca. on October 18,19, 20, 2018. For more information, contact Jairo Wong at 310-679-8310 or George Anderson, at 310-476-0908.

Emotional Intelligence For Mediators

James Duffy published a valuable piece in 2010 probing the value of emotional intelligence for mediation practice. Emotional intelligence (EI) is an established conceptual framework for harnessing the impact of mediator’s emotions in a purposive and positive way in practice. What is EI? It is a conceptual framework emanating from positive psychology and made popular by the work of Dan Goleman. EI emphasizes reflective practice in relation to the emotional dimensions of intra and interpersonal experience.https://adrresearch.net/2016/01/31/emotional-intelligence-in-mediation-practice/
Mediators who are trained in Emotional Intelligence Coaching are more likely to be able to use their own emotions as a tool for connecting with clients. In mediation, it is helpful to use EQ-i-2.0 Assessments as a guide to identify the emotional intelligence competencies in which the clients may score in the low or deficit range as well as the scales in which the excel.
In practice, it is common to find that clients who experience difficulties in resolving conflicts with others also tend to score low in Emotional Self-Awareness, Assertiveness, Empathy, Problem Solving, Reality Testing, Impulse Control or Flexibility. Each of these scales can be the focus of the mediation and serve as the development or enhancement of Emotional Intelligence skills that are useful in all interpersonal relationships.

The U.S. Postal Service Addresses "Going Postal"

"George Anderson is a trained psychotherapist and founder and president of Anderson & Anderson, an anger management firm with an office in Lawndale California. Anderson served as an adviser for the film 'Anger Management.'
Anderson's classes typically teach participants how to recognize their anger and then use relaxation methods to calm themselves. Employees referred to Anderson usually attend 10 counseling sessions, often as a contingent requirement for continued employment.

Depending on the situation, sometimes the company covers the expense and sometimes it comes out of the employee's pocket, Anderson said.

Another of Anderson's primary functions is training facilitators nationwide who can either enact programs within their corporations or at consulting services that contract with companies.

The U.S. Postal Service, frequently the butt of many workplace anger jokes and a few outbursts of workplace-related violence, recently decided to train its in-house facilitators and disperse them to facilities nationwide.

An official with the Postal Service's National Center for Employee Development in Norman, Okla., confirmed that a contract had been signed with Anderson's firm, but would not comment on the record, saying that the program was in its trial phase.

. Once an initial batch of facilitators had been trained, the Postal Service would evaluate the program's effectiveness, the official said. He noted there was no specific push for the implementation of the course, saying only that like any large corporation, the Postal Service has many employees who deal with stressful situations." Aggression And Violence Are Impediments To Academic Performance

#Spousal abuse
#Sexual abuse
#Child abuse
#Elder abuse
#Family Violence
#School Violence
#Child Neglect

I was trained as a Child Psychotherapist after completing an MSW and Post Graduate Training at Harvard University School of Medicine in 1973. After over 40 years of practice, I can offer many examples of how the 7 specific behaviors above can damage precision learning in childhood.

I ask that you try and think of any of these situations in which you are aware of in your personal or professional life.  Self-awareness is one of the key competencies to self-control, social awareness, relationship management and empathy. Emotional Intelligence Skill enhancement offers hope for positive alternatives to all of these potential tragic situations.
