What can private practice mental health professionals do now to plan for the future after Covid-19?

In my opinion, tele-psychotherapy will become the new norm. This will include mandated services such as DUI counseling, anger management, batterer’s intervention and services that have been traditionally provided in groups. The niches listed above all will likely increase during this period. This is unfortunate, but true

In California, there are now state or local laws relative to anger management. As the Vendor for Anger Management in Los Angeles County, I Certified Anger Management Providers with Pre and Post Assessments including client workbooks will now be able to provide individual session via SKYPE or Zoom. This was actually imitated by San Francisco Courts.

Any services that can be provided in a group offer the provider a greater hourly income than one on one intervention. Person who are certified in anger management, batterer’s intervention or substance abuse are able to more for one group of 15 clients than one person for 45 minutes or one hour. The time of quarantine may be used by gaining certification in any or all of the certifications mentioned above. Each of these specialties can be completed online.

AMA Continuing Medical Education course for physicians

Continuing Medical Education from the AMA for burnout will not benefit doctors who are impacted by Covid-19.

This is embarrassing but sadly true. You don't have to be a doctor to see that more is needed than what is available from the American Medical Association for it's physicians.

Education alone is not a realistic remedy for physician burnout or "disruptive behavior" that may risk patient safety.

Covid 19 will dramatically increase physician burnout

Anderson & Anderson, APC has provided Emotional Intelligence Coaching for “disruptive physicians” since 2008. Our published evidence based coaching curriculum uses Pre and Post EQ-i-2.0 Assessments for each client along with client workbooks and ancillary coaching material..
In my experience, most physicians who are referred for “disruptive behavior” are the same ones who are actually physicians who suffer from unrecognized and untreated burnout.
According to Dr. Peter Grinspoon, Harvard Medical School, “Sadly, hospitals and other medical institutions have tended to address the problem of physician burnout merely by giving their doctors inspirational talks about “resilience,” patting them on the shoulder, and then sending them back into their deteriorating clinical lives with no material change in circumstances. Sometimes they throw in a yoga mat. The physician then continues to suffer in silence, leaves medicine, or encounters some other tragic endpoint”.

Today, I have decided to expand and refocus our work with physicians who are suffering burnout prior to their referral for “disruptive behavior”.

The Case For Anger Management Facilitator Certification

The need for Anger Management and Emotional Intelligence is trending in the U.S. Anger is a secondary emotion based on other primary emotions such as fear, anxiety, stress, depression, sleep deprivation or fatigue.

There is a dramatic increase in road rage, simple battery, aggressive behavior in schools, bullying, child abuse, asw well as person directed violence in healthcare business, and industry.

Certified Anger Management Facilitators (CAMF) use the Anderson & Anderson, APC evidenced based curriculum along with client workbooks and Pre and Post Emotional Intelligence Assessments.

Anger management classes offers the provider a route to proceed in which to generate more income in a shorter period of time. If you run a class with 10 members and charge a fee of $45.00 per client, you have generated $450.00 in an hour. Very few providers earn $450.00 an hour.  So anger management classes can be an incredible income producer for one’s private practice.

This two-day live Anger Management Facilitator Certification will be offered in Culver City at Pepperdine University on April 17 & 18, 2020. To register, phone 310-729-9390.
