How One Psychotherapy/Coaching Practice Effectively Used Three Interns
“Businesses and organizations could have many reasons for wanting to hire an intern. Interns can provide additional talent to complete an existing project, start a new one or simply allow some weight to be relieved from a small business owner’s shoulders. Interns can also bring a fresh way of thinking and vital marketing and communication skills such as working with social media and web development. In addition to these benefits, interns are a cost effective means to bring in extra support for your business, and internships can lead to finding exceptional future employees. “
Several years ago Anderson & Anderson, APC registered with an Internet Student Intern Employment site. We described the services that we offered that included psychotherapy for children, adolescents and adults as well as Facilitator Certification trainings in Batterer’s Intervention and Anger Management. We also explained that we sell client workbooks and DVDs on anger management, domestic violence and parenting.
We announced that we were seeking Summer Interns interested in Small Business, Internet Marketing, or DVD productions. To our surprise, we received a large number of applicants from MBA programs, Film Schools as well as Psychology and Social Work students.
We hired one MBA student from Penn State University who received academic credit for his participation in the internship. This student was interested in Internet Marketing.
A second student was in Cinematography at USC. The third student was an MSW interested in Clinical Social Work.
Our firm was required by the MBA students’ University to provide a written plan describing the project that the student needed to complete during the three-month internship. Progress reports were required monthly. This proved helpful in keeping the student and our staff on target relative his project.
This student was instrumental in dramatically increasing Anderson & Anderson, APC’s Internet Presence as well as making George Anderson recognized on the Internet as the Anger Management Guru.https://www.google.com/#q=anger+management+guru+on+linked+in
The film student recruited volunteers from his school to assist in making a training film entitled “Styles Of Communication”.http://shop.andersonservices.com/stylesofcommunication-dvd.aspx
This DVD is very popular among Substance Abuse Counselors, Anger Management Facilitators as well as Batterers’ Intervention providers. This student was hired by Anderson & Anderson, APC as a full-time staff and developed more DVDs and related training material.
The MSW student was primarily interested in Clinical Supervision and was therefore not able to contribute much to the organization.
Anderson & Anderson, APC is now seeking another intern. This time we are looking for a Media Intern (Film/Video/Photo). Here is an excellent link for finding interns:http://www.internships.com/employer
Coaches and Psychotherapists often fail so see themselves as entrepreneurs. However, we are small business owners and we need to take advantage of the options available to help us succeed. Creative use of Interns can greatly expand our practices.

College students are self-referring for Emotional Intelligence Coaching
“College life
for most freshmen is emotionally challenging. The security and comfort of old relationships are interrupted,
bringing feelings of grief, or loss, or of being at sea—in spite of being
surrounded by hundreds (often thousands) of new peers. In the context of those
ruptures, the desire to connect can lead kids to make unsatisfying or poor
choices, perhaps even socializing with people they don’t really like. Some
freshmen bring with them unresolved interpersonal difficulties from high school
or family life, which complicates their adjustment.”
Students experiencing any of the issues mentioned above are reluctant to seek counseling or
psychotherapy based on the stigma associated with mental illness. While
emotional intelligence coaching is not an intervention for the treatment of
nervous or mental disorders, it is proving to be effective with many of the
common problems associated with challenging situations experienced by new
college students.
Many of these
students need practical emotional intelligence skills. Emotional Intelligence Assessments are designed to identify the
student’s level of competence in EI scales such as, self-awareness,
self-control, empathy, impulse control, relationship management and other
skills needed for success in school, work and interpersonal relationships.
There is a
growing body of research that suggests that
the skills of emotional intelligence such as the ability to reason with and about emotions to
achieve goals are correlated with positive outcomes across the entire age
spectrum, from preschool through adulthood. Emotions affect learning,
decision-making, creativity, relationships, and health. People with more
developed EI skills do better in life, school and work. Among college students,
skills of emotional intelligence are linked to engaging in fewer risky
behaviors.
The
millenniums have discovered “emotional
intelligence coaching” and they like it. A simple announcement on our website regarding the
Anderson & Anderson, APC six-month skill enhancement has lead to a steady
flow of high school and college students enrollees.
Here
are some of the reasons listed for seeking assistance by these self-referred
clients:
· I would like to become more social.
· My friends say that I am always angry.
· I lose my temper a lot.
· I have a bad relationship with my parents.
· My grades went down because of my partying.
· I am on academic probation but I am not a bad student.
· My girlfriend says that I am immature.
· I am having a hard time adjusting to dorm life.
· I have never been this stressed in my life.
· It’s hard to trust anyone who is competing against
you.
· I have been drinking and using drugs with my
fraternity.
Emotional intelligence coaching
generally includes Pre and Post EI assessments, client workbooks, Dvds and
weekly coaching sessions either live or via Skype.
Emotional Intelligence coaching for
college students can be an additional income stream for Emotional Intelligence
Coaches.
